Apalus Mosquito Trap

Here in Upstate New York, the mosquitoes are unbearable.  Truly unbearable.  When I saw this product, I was super excited!!  An LED light that attracts mosquitoes and sucks them in as a trap – seemed too good to be true!  I was selected to receive this mosquito & insect trap for free or highly discounted in exchange for an unbiased and honest review.  I was even MORE EXCITED.  Let’s get to the review:

For starters, I wanted to LOVE LOVE LOVE this unit.  When I received it, I tried it one night at dusk, plugged it in outside – placed the unit away from people and turned it on!  The light turned on, fans turned on, and I was extremely hopeful.   Then nothing happened.  I mean nothing.  Period.  No zapping, no flickering.  And after a few hours of it being on, I didn’t see anything in the hopper either.  So I emailed the company.   They explained that it’s not a zapper, it’s a lure & catch trap.  But still, nothing was in the trap portion….  I was pretty disappointed.

A couple days after that, I saw a few flies in the house — probably from the pool party where people kept opening the door every 10 seconds!  I figured since it’s listed on amazon as an “LED Insect Trap” so I tried it indoor to attempt to capture these flies!!!!! (SO ANNOYING!)

I plugged it in, and walked away.  An hour later I came over to see if anything happened – i took out the tray and to my surprise, a fly flew out of it!!!!  I don’t know if it didn’t get sucked all the way in, or what…… but it shocked me!  But I was encouraged that SOMETHING happened!!!   But still, 3 flies inside my house continued.   I kept it on and walked away.  Hours later, still nothing.  I even left it on all night downstairs in the kitchen where the flies liked to fly around…….. NOTHING.  Hours and hours and hours, yielded nothing.  In fact, it started to get comical in fact because the flies would either fly right around the trap, and sometimes even LAND ON IT!!!  I don’t know if the fans aren’t strong enough to suck the flies in — but it really didn’t work for me.  Except for sucking one of them halfway in, but not getting into the trap itself.  I emailed the company yet again and this is what they said:

Here is my suggestion, and please use it in dark room without people. Reasons as below:
1) The mosquitoes are attracted by the blue light from the Insect Trap, and the performance will be better if no other light to attract these bugs.
2) Compared with the blue light, the mosquitoes like the smell from people much more. It will be better if it’s used in the room without people. We advise that you could use the product in your bedroom before you sleep, while you could turn off the room’s lights, and close the door. You could walk in the bedroom and have a good sleep after the product kills the mosquitoes there.

Unfortunately, it didn’t work like that.  We don’t have mosquitoes IN our house, but rather OUTSIDE our house.  And what’s INSIDE are flies… which maybe the unit isn’t powerful enough to suck in.   So I guess I would change the amazon listing to say it’s an INDOOR ONLY unit if that’s what it’s really designed for, and change it to MOSQUITO ONLY trap – because it doesn’t seem to work for larger insects.   I emailed the company 6 days ago to see if there’s any other suggestions to get this product to work better…… Heard nothing back.  It was a holiday weekend, yes… but still… no other suggestions.  At this point, i really don’t recommend this product as I couldn’t find a way for this unit to be of use for me.  I will continue to test it and maybe it will work better at some point….. and if it does, i’ll come back and revise this review.  Right now though, I just couldn’t figure out how to use this effectively.
